As Poodehii considers the designer's touch to be all important, it hopes to become a networking platform for local designers and help match designers with good potential with the industry. The platform will then help Taiwanese design shine on the international stage.
The name Poodehii was chosen not only to leverage the impression that people have of Taiwan's puppet theater for a new Taiwanese brand born in 2007 but also to imply that it's the hand within that decides the success and failure of a play. It's the designer's hands that decide whether a cultural product can capture the essence of culture under its creative and fashionable exterior.
It was this "observe life and promote culture through design" philosophy that led to Hou creating the "Poodehii" brand in 2007. The brand name looks French at first but it is in fact the phonetic transliteration of "Hand Puppet Theater" in Taiwanese. The brand uses observations of life as its central theme then applies Western design techniques and Oriental culture to create very modern boutique designs. In the hands of the designer, the elegance and reserve of Oriental culture acquires a powerful presence of its own.
For Hou, the culture and creative industry is about more than just enabling products to interact with the consumer. It's also about more than turning simple ideas into simple design concepts. To Hou, it is the responsibility of the industry to promote the richness and depth of Oriental culture. Only those who are passionate about their own products and their own culture will succeed in the industry in the long run.
The driving force was Cheerful Group founder Hou Yuan-tang. With over 20 years of ODM experience for international boutique brands, he shaped the Cheerful Group into an organization that can quickly design and manufacture products as well as market them internationally. When the company began building its own brand, it took advantage of the Hakka Cultural Festival in Taiwan and Hakka Tung blossom products produced by local vendors to introduce Taiwanese cultural design to the international market. The move proved a runaway success at the Frankfurt Trade Show and opened new doors for the culture and creative industry.
